The PMHS ice hockey team, the number two seed in the Section One, Division Two playoffs, lost 6-0 in the tournament final to rival Rye on Sunday evening at the Brewster Ice Arena.
After a scoreless first period, number-one-seed Rye tallied four times in the second period and twice in the third to take the title.
Rye made it to the final by beating Byram Hills 6-4 at the Hommocks Park Ice Rink on Friday. That game initially started the day before, but had to be paused during the third period due to a power outage at the Playland Ice Casino.
In its semifinal match, Pelham dominated Mahopac 9-4 on Thursday.
The game started with quick scores in the first period, and the goals just kept coming. Pelham’s Winston Speros put the first one in at 4:25 into the period. Mahopac tied it soon after, and Pelham retook the lead with a goal by Owen Duffy at 9:06 and extended its advantage to 3-1 following a power play goal scored by freshman Luigi Di Cristofano. The Pelicans went into the break with a 3-2 lead.
In the second period, Mahopac tallied again, but Pelham added to its lead with two goals from Reeve Murrell and one by Owen Weistra, putting the score at to 6-3. In the third period, Will Garrow, Matthew Veteri and Ian Hearle all scored for the Pelicans to seal the 9-4 win. Junior goaltender Cam White had a commanding performance with 18 total saves.
The loss to Rye marks the end of Pelham’s strong season. The team had a 12-8 record and appeared in the sectional finals for the third consecutive season. The Pelicans will return next year with a young and talented roster.
