Dear Dr. Champ and the members of the Pelham Board of Education,
We are writing to you on behalf of Pelham Preservation and Garden Society (PPGS), a Pelham organization dedicated to the preservation of historical landmarks and architectural heritage. We are reaching out to express our concern regarding the ongoing discussions surrounding the Siwanoy school project. We believe it is vital that the preservation of the architectural integrity and historical significance of this site be given careful, thoughtful consideration throughout the planning and execution phases.
As an organization, we urge that this process be conducted in a mindful and transparent manner, one that actively involves the relevant stakeholders and engages local residents in meaningful ways. The involvement of community members and experts such as the bond steering committee is essential in ensuring that all perspectives, ideas and solutions are heard, and that the values we place on heritage and history are not overlooked. We are concerned that this process has been rushed and should be given additional time to hear all sides and concerns. The board vote should take place in 2026.
We strongly believe that preserving the unique character of our built environment enriches the cultural fabric of our community and provides a sense of place for generations to come. We offer our full support to work alongside you in facilitating a process that is both thoughtful and inclusive. Our expertise, resources and commitment to this cause are at your disposal, and we are eager to contribute in any way that would be helpful.

If the vote takes place in 2026 that means the community has to wait an extra year for the accessibility improvements Siwanoy sorely needs.
“Preservation and architecture” have already been talked about at length during the many meetings held on the subject, for which video is publicly available on YouTube. Nobody wants to change the character of the building, and in fact they want the additions to blend right in, looking as if they’ve been here for 100 years.

The board could have prioritized accessibility from the start, but chose to “go big” and talk about tearing down the wings and extremely large additions.
If this was a $5M project for ADA, we wouldn’t be here. But this $140MM total ask including a $30MM Siwanoy project is where the Board wants us to be.
Your complaint should be with the Board and how they have chosen to bundle accessibility with unpopular and expensive projects. If the bond is voted down and the ADA accommodations are delayed for another year, residents know where to go.
