Pelham Memorial High School’s orchestra won gold at the Nashville Heritage Festival, the chamber chorus and jazz band each took silver and the three ensembles collected the Instrumental Sweepstakes award for having the highest combined score.
Rachel Solomon and Elliott Levine both won awards for their violin solos in the orchestra’s performance.
More than 70 high school students went on the four-day trip to Nashville starting March 14 to participate in the festival.
“I had a really enjoyable time, being able to connect with the members of our musical ensembles throughout the trip was a memorable experience,” said Levine. “When it came time to play, the orchestra supported me and Rachel so we could play our best.” He said all their practice with orchestra teacher Raffi Froundjian paid off.
The students and chaperones explored a variety of local restaurants and four museums and historic sites focusing on the rich culture of Nashville and its country music scene, including the African American Music History Museum, the Country Music Hall of Fame and the Belle Meade Historic Site. Additionally, they attended a show at the historic Grand Ole Opry House and participated in a backstage tour.
“The highlight of the trip for me was Saturday night,” said Maria Abeshouse, chorus teacher and chair of the music department. “We were in this fun venue called Category 10, and there was a great band, good food and a line dance instructor. Everyone seemed happy and relaxed after our performances from the morning.”
