Dear Reader,
We hope you had a great summer and got to take some time off. While our reporters and editors also got to take some time off to be with their families, the Pelham Examiner remained dedicated to covering the town’s news over July and August.
When Caffe Ammi shut down without notice, we were there to report it. When the Pelican Room opened up for business, we were there too. Our staff rated the best places for coffee, ice cream and chicken sandwiches in town and it’s clear from the number of page clicks that readers ate it up.
On the afternoon of July 30, a heavy storm blew through town, felling trees, flooding our streets and causing a power outage. Our staff responded in real time, with photos and a story that evening.
The Pelham Examiner also covered meetings of the school board and town government this summer, which led to stories about quality-of-life issues that matter to everyone here. In one case, a resident with a passion for gardening urged her village’s trustees to update its landscaping rules. Across town, residents of a side street that has become a shortcut for buses and garbage trucks implored their trustees to consider placing speed humps on their block. During a board of education meeting, a group of elementary school parents called out the district for misleading them on the progress of a proposal to build an outdoor classroom.
Not everyone has the time to attend these meetings in person or watch them online. The Pelham Examiner covers them to keep you up to speed on what’s happening in town government—during the summer and year round.
We celebrate the successes that members of our community achieve, from Kate Douglass winning gold medals at an international swimming competition in Singapore to Lisa Stiefvater taking a small yoga group from her living room and turning it into a thriving business in town.
We also mark somber occasions, reporting the passing of our residents and their loved ones, and covering the town’s annual tribute to victims of the 9/11 attacks.
As we head into this new season, we look forward to a full slate of amazing community events—PMHS varsity sports, the Pelham Children’s Center’s pumpkin festival, the Junior League’s Halloween party, and popular fundraisers like Novel Night, Studio Café and the Civics’ fall gala. We will be there for all of it.
But we need to do a little fundraising of our own. As many of you know, the Pelham Examiner is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, which allows us to seek support from the community through donations. With a staff of extremely talented and dedicated volunteer student writers and editors, our model is lean, but we still need your support. We have a dual mission of being a reliable, independent newspaper for Pelham, while also providing our all-volunteer staff with the opportunity to write, edit, and run our award-winning news operation. Please donate to the Pelham Examiner today and help us continue this mission.
With gratitude,
Greg Farrell
Executive Director
