Pelham Examiner Executive Editor Charlotte Howard was awarded the 2020 Rotary Scholarship by the Rotary Club of the Pelhams. Howard graduated from Pelham Memorial High School on Saturday.

The Rotary also announced in a press release Tuesday that its fall 2020 Tastings event will be cancelled due to the uncertainties of the coronavirus pandemic. Instead, the club is seeking donations for the Gift of Life heart surgeries funded by the event and for its scholarship.

Howard, one of the student-owned newspaper’s founders, served as its design editor and assistant managing editor last year, when the paper was named fourth best news website by the New York Press Association, an 800-member professional trade group. For the past year through last Friday, she was in the top post of executive editor.

Last year, Howard was picked to represent New York State at the 2019 Al Neuharth Free Spirit and Journalism Conference in June.

She was a member of the National Honor Society as well as the English, Math, World Foreign Language and Social Studies honor societies. She was also captain of the track team and editor of the PMHS Yearbook. She created the Charlotte Cares fundraising website for Dream Big Ghana, which builds compost toilets for families in Dzita, Ghana. She was captain of Polar Plunge to help sponsor Special Olympics athletes and was a volunteer in Guatemala, teaching English.
