Pelham Manor board announces framework for pact with Village of Pelham on food-scrap recycling

Editor’s note: This press release was provided by the Village of Pelham Manor.

On Monday Dec. 14th, at the Board of Trustees Meeting, the Village of Pelham Manor continued its review of gasoline powered leaf blowers and their effects on the environment. The Board of Trustees remains committed to environmental stewardship and is reviewing draft legislation that would, over time, phase out the use of gasoline powered leaf blowers. We are collaborating with residents, environmental advocacy groups and local landscapers as part of this process. We will continue our discussions and public review in the New Year.

The Board also announced a conceptual framework for an inter-municipal agreement with the Village of Pelham regarding a food scraps waste management program. Following more than three years of critical review, this effort would allow interested residents in both villages to participate in the program. The food scrap drop off facility is slated to be housed and maintained by the Village of Pelham, with Pelham Manor providing necessary financial support for the creation and maintenance of the program. This program is a logical first step toward participation in a food digestion program, as outlined in Westchester County’s report issued earlier this year. By using food scraps as an energy source, a digestion program would lessen the environmental footprint for food waste by converting material into gas for resale to utilities (see diagram below), creating a circular economy. The County recently announced that it would reduce the “tip” (or drop-off) fee to that charged for regular municipal waste, making this option more affordable than it was previously.

Pelham Manor is proud of its strong environmental leadership, always remaining mindful of our fiscal responsibility to residents. We welcome resident feedback on both items above, and our next Board of Trustees Meeting is Monday, January 11th, 2021.
