PMHS girls field hockey team wins second consecutive league championship
The Pelham girls varsity field hockey team clinched the League D regular season championship Saturday morning, after topping White Plains 1-0. This is the second time in two years the Pelicans have won the league, following a 2020 season in which they were also became section champions.
Coming into league play, the Pelicans were 4-4; however, they finished the season out at 9-4. Part of their success runs through senior captain Eileen Mazzaro, who will be playing Division 1 for Villanova University next fall.
“Our team is extremely close,” said junior Emma Crotty. “Every practice was filled with so many laughs and the team atmosphere was definitely a big reason why we were able to win the league. We all knew we had each other’s backs and that really made the game more enjoyable for everyone.”
The team notched wins over North Rockland, Suffern, Ursuline and Pleasantville, marking statement victories for head coach April Clapp’s squad.
Pelham will begin playing in the Class A section playoffs within the next week, and the players are hoping to become back-to-back winners.
