Time to learn about invasive spotted lantern fly—now in Pelham neighborhoods
To the editor:
I invite you to educate yourselves about the highly invasive spotted lantern fly, now found in our neighborhoods. Turns out it’s been in Pelham at least one year, but people didn’t know the problem it poses. There’s lots of information available online. The U.S. Department of Agriculture is monitoring its spread and noting our area, including all of Long Island, New Jersey and nearby Connecticut are in the infestation zone.

We have had lantern flies in our local area in South Bergen County. We contact our state agency to let it know as we are considered out of the lantern fly area. We have been encouraged to kill them — stomping on them, dousing them with Dawn dishwashing liquid or white vinegar solution . Please see if your county has a reporting system in place. Watch out for the “Tree of Heaven” plant/weed; both lantern fly nymphs and adults love it.
