PCRA boys crew team wins second, third at NYS championships, qualifying for nationals
The Pelham Community Rowing Association boys team had a field day at the New York State Scholastic Championships in Saratoga Springs, with two of its crews finishing in the top three. The first and second varsity eight boats both qualified for Youth Nationals in Sarasota, Florida, which will take place June 8-11.
PMHS junior Max Purcea and senior Charlie Gottfried were in the crew that finished second in the first varsity eight, with an impressive 5:13.453 time and a .03 second split. PMHS sophomore Justin Cohen coxed the second varsity boat, which placed third and clocked in a solid 4:49.430.
“It feels great to know we’re among the best out there,” said Purcea. “Nationals is our chance to really leave our mark in the community, and let everyone know we’re serious about our races.”
PCRA ended the weekend with a total of 27 medals, continuing to demonstrate its strength as a program. Pelham will contend in the youth national championships at Nathan Benderson Park in Saratoga Springs, where the team will hope to show what they can do on the biggest stage.
