Francis Hoffman – Sept. 30

Francis J. Hoffman of City Island, NY passed away on Saturday, September 30, 2023. He was 91 years old. He was born on Jan. 1, 1932 in the house he grew up in to his parents Kathleen and John Hoffman. He attended St Mary Star of the Sea grammar school and graduated from Evander Childs High School. He went to work as a draftsman for Con Edison where he worked for over 40 years, retiring as a Design Engineer supervisor.

An avid boater, he spent his entire life on City Island excluding the three years he spent in the Navy during the Korean War. In 1960, he married Sally and they raised 3 children.  After Sally’s death, he married Barbara who shared his love of boating and introduced him to international travel.

In his 50s, he learned to sail and became a member of the City Island Yacht Club where he became Commodore. He was a vibrant, active part of many organizations, most notably The St Vincent DePaul Society, the Bronx Democratic Club and the American Legion. Always with a smile on his face, he greeted everyone on his walks, with a soft spot for dogs.

Francis was predeceased by his first wife Sally, his daughter Mary, and his brother Joseph. He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Barbara, his daughter Kate and son John, their spouses, his son-in-law Tony and six grandchildren; Eileen, Dan, Jack, Tom, Allie, and Charlotte. He will be missed by all who knew him.

A celebration of Francis’s life will take place at Pelham Funeral Home located at 64 Lincoln Avenue, Pelham, New York, on Wednesday, October 4th, from 4-8 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at St. Mary Star of the Sea Roman Catholic Church located at 596 City Island Ave, Bronx, NY 10464 on Thursday, October 5th, at 10:00 am. Interment will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery.

    I worked with Frank for quite a few years at Con Edison. He was a wonderful man to work with and taught me a lot. Always upbeat and very helpful.
