Reelect Kristen Burke, Maura Curtin and Adam Kagan: ‘proven leaders who make us proud to call Pelham our home’

To the editor:

If you were persuading a friend to move to Pelham, what would you say to help them understand what a special place it is? Perhaps you’d mention the great schools, tree-lined streets, small-town feel and closeness to New York City, and its growing diversity and opportunity. You’d probably include all of these —and most certainly—you’d talk about the people. The way we unite in times of crisis to help one another. How we value integrity, honesty and a sense of togetherness—which help make Pelham a community in the best sense of the word.

On Tuesday, three enormously talented and committed Pelham residents are seeking reelection to continue making Pelham a place we can be proud to call home. I, along with the full Pelham Democratic Committee, put forward our strongest endorsement for Councilwoman Kristen Burke and Councilwoman Maura Curtin, candidates for seats on the town council, and Judge Adam Kagan, candidate for town justice.

If we measure their candidacies on the basis of results, all three earned a second term. Their accomplishments include: establishing a plan and securing a $450,000 grant to help fund a new, dedicated ambulance service that will save lives; expanding and innovating library and recreation programming, a public good that nurtures our children’s learning, well-being and growth; prioritizing sustainable practices and policy making, through partnerships like Sustainable Westchester, and modernizing all aspects of town government, from the Daronco Town House renovation and critical updating of the court system’s practices to expanding first-rate after-school childcare availability.

We can also assess Burke, Curtin, and Kagan’s candidacies by the kind of people they are and the values that guide them in their public and daily lives. All three are longstanding “big D” Democrats, a fact that their records reflect. In contrast to Republican town board candidate Clive Anderson, they haven’t donated to people and PACs that undermined our nation on Jan. 6. (According to Federal Election Commission filings, Anderson made several donations to “Donald J. Trump for President” and “WinRed.”) They don’t support organizations like the NRA that foster gun violence across our country, something that Anderson previously and publicly posted about on his Instagram account. Burke, Curtin and Kagan have worked hard to make Pelham a better community by looking forward, not backward, and by living their values with authenticity.

I’ve chosen to raise my family in Pelham because of its character, but also because I believe in its people, and the power of an informed, accountable and honest government. While all candidates have the right to their political beliefs, we deserve transparency and openness from them. It’s how they earn our trust and our vote.

Please join me in voting on Tuesday for Kristen Burke, Maura Curtin and Adam Kagan, proven leaders who make us proud to call Pelham our home.

When the Supreme Court is hearing arguments today about placing guns in the hands of domestic abusers, it’s a stark reminder of how important it is that we have local elected officials who understand the NRA is not what Pelham needs.

Thank you for this endorsement. The Democratic slate will put people and families and children first in this town.
