Freestanding ATMs stolen from Pelham Manor businesses by thieves who use hand trucks or lug them out

YouTube video that purports to show an ATM being taken from Pelham Manor Car Wash & Lube.

Freestanding automated teller machines have been stolen from stores in the Village of Pelham Manor by suspects who carry the ATMs away or use hand trucks, according to a notice Friday to businesses from Police Chief Thomas Atkins.

Atkins did not say how many ATMs have been taken or which businesses were victims of the crimes, but he told store owners the machines should be bolted to the floor to prevent further theft.

“The suspects were able to easily remove the ATM because it was not secured to the flooring,” Atkins said in the notice.

A video posted to YouTube and Instagram purports to show an ATM being removed from Pelham Manor Car Wash & Lube on Boston Post Road. The Pelham Examiner could not independently verify if the video shows an actual theft. The Examiner called the car wash several times but the manager was not available for an interview.

The YouTube version is above. The video is on Instagram here. (Warning: Profanities can be heard on the soundtrack).

In the video, two men in yellow safety vests wrestle an AMT into the back of a small dark SUV as the machine’s center door flops open and closed. Others in the video appear to be staff and customers of the car wash. One woman says, “Take a picture of the plate. Take a picture of the plate.”

“If you have an ATM within your business or plan on having one installed, it is highly recommended that business owners request the vendors of the ATM to properly bolt it to the floor,” said Atkins. “In addition, the ATM should be located away from the business doorway and be within the view of any existing security cameras.”

In a separate email, the Village of Pelham Manor said, “While this type of theft has seen an uptick county-wide, we are actively working toward prevention in our local community. This is a good time to remind all community members that in an emergency situation, your first call should be to the police department at 914-738-1000 or 911 from a landline phone.”
