Isabel Harther – March 2

Isabel Margarita Harther, a resident of Rye, New York, passed away peacefully on March 2nd, 2024, at the age of 85. Born in Puerto Rico at the end of the depression era, Isabel was the daughter of Teodoro and Isabel Cortes, and one of three siblings.

In her formative years, Isabel’s family relocated to New York, where she attended the New York Institute for the Blind in the Bronx, later transferring to Charles Evans Hughes in Chelsea for her senior year of high school. After completing her education, she pursued her passion for business at Monroe Business School, earning an associate degree. Isabel embarked on a fulfilling career with Catholic Charities in New York City, demonstrating dedication and commitment throughout her tenure. Not content with just one achievement, she furthered her education by earning her bachelor’s degree from the City University of New York in 1999, exemplifying her lifelong pursuit of knowledge and self-improvement.

In a heartwarming twist of fate, Isabel reunited with a quiet young man she had once known during her time at the NY Institute for the Blind, Charles “Hank” Harther of Pelham. Their love blossomed, leading to marriage and the blending of their families, until Charles’ passing in 2011.

A devout member of the Dominican Third Order for over 50 years, Isabel’s life was deeply rooted in faith. She was actively involved in the Ladies of Charity and found joy in her participation in the American Blind Bowling Association. With a warm and outgoing personality, Isabel cherished spending time with loved ones, knitting and making lasting memories.

Isabel is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Charles Harther. She is survived by her daughter Elizabeth Marie Ortiz and Beth Hope Harther (Dwayne) Moll. She will be fondly remembered by her brother Alfred Pacheco, as well as her four grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren, niece, and nephew. She is predeceased by her brother Carlos Pacheco.

A celebration of Isabel’s life will be held at the Pelham Funeral Home, 64 Lincoln Avenue, Pelham, New York, on Wednesday, March 6th, from 4:00 to 8:00 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at the Church of the Resurrection, 910 Boston Post Road, Rye, New York, on Thursday, March 7th, at 10:00 AM, followed by interment at Woodlawn Cemetery, Bronx, New York.
