The Mount Vernon Stop & Shop at 240 East Sandford Blvd. will close alongside 31 underperforming stores, according to the Stop & Shop website.
The mass closure is the result of the company’s commitment to “creating a healthy base for the future growth” of its brand, said Gordon Reid, president of Stop & Shop, in the press release. Stop and Shop said it plans to make investments to improve prices and the customer experience.
Workers at the Mount Vernon store will be offered other opportunities within the company.
Stop & Shop said it will communicate specific closing dates to local customers well in advance of the shuttering of locations, but all outlets are anticipated to be out of business on or before Nov. 2.
After, the company will continue to operate more than 350 stores across New York, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New Jersey and Massachusetts.
Stop & Shop said it remains committed to serving its communities through other store locations, online shopping and home delivery services.

Observable that S&S is closing in Mount Vernon whose population is largely Black and African American. I have shopped at that store and the one in New Rochelle, often. It is my opinion that the New Rochelle store did not have much more foot traffic than Mount Vernon. Would love to see the “study” S&S did to determine that their Mount Vernon store was underperforming compared to their other nearby stores, (including Yonkers and New Rochelle) and other grocery chains in the area.

I have also shopped both but shop the New Rochelle location more because while they could both improve in many areas, at least the New Ro location has a better selection. If you want a new product you often have to go to NR to find it.

It can’t close soon enough, hoping it’s going to be either Shoprite or acme
