Local ice cream shop Sweet Lincoln at 232 Fifth Ave. announced on Instagram it will be closing down on Nov. 17.
“There’s a long list of reasons that we decided to close up shop,” Clayton Bushong, co-owner with Mark Kindig, said in an interview. “The reality is that we couldn’t continue doing it. We are moving on because the space didn’t work for us, and costs of goods have come to the point that it was no longer sustainable.”
Sweet Lincoln originally opened in September 2022, at the time serving as Pelham’s sole ice cream shop following the closure of Double Rainbow in 2021.
“There is a lot of different reasons that it didn’t work for us,” said Kindig. “I think retail is a tricky business. You need certain things out of it. I did not think its closing would come as soon as it did, though. I’m definitely going to miss it.”
“It was very cool to see kids hanging out in the booths and eating ice cream,” he said.
“We loved getting to know our employees, the high schoolers, who were all fantastic,” said Bushong. “The support from all the customers was amazing, and we will definitely miss that.”
All customers prior to the closing can order any size of ice cream for $5.

Inflation is a curse for small businesses. And sadly, as Fed Chair Powell said, generally prices don’t go down by as much as they’ve gone up. Like the hangover from Lyndon Johnson, the hangover from the unnecessary inflation of the last few years will be with us for a while and will harm places like this one for years to come.

Nothing survives in that spot. It’s like a curse. I live a block away. I really enjoyed going there

I guess it’s just a bad location but it feels like it has to be a curse when even an ice cream shop can’t survive in a town as family friendly as Pelham. Washington Heights just got a bookstore/ice cream shop and it feels like that should work here too, but maybe not.
