Pelham, NY –March 14 – Twenty-one Scouts from Pelham Troop 1, ranging from sixth to tenth grade, experienced a living history lesson at the 2025 Encampment and Pilgrimage, Fort Washington State Park, March 7th-8th. The Cradle of Liberty Council, BSA event featured two nights of camping and a full day of Revolutionary War activities.
The Scouts from Pelham Troop 1 experienced a full day of immersive Revolutionary War history, learning about period first aid, music, and camaraderie, interspersed between two nights of camping. They discovered the sacrifices of the past, gaining valuable skills and a new perspective.
Perhaps one of the most immersive experiences was the opportunity to cook a period recipe. Scouts tried their hand at preparing a simple cornmeal flatbread, using techniques and ingredients available to soldiers during the revolution, gaining a deeper appreciation for the hardships faced by those who fought for independence.
The annual Encampment and Pilgrimage, a tradition since 1913 held at Fort Washington State Park, immerses participants in Revolutionary War history. Representatives from four states attended the event, highlighting its widespread appeal. Throughout the day, they moved between stations, experiencing reenactments that vividly brought to life Continental and Hessian soldiers, fostering a deeper understanding of the era’s challenges.
The Scouts from Pelham Troop 1 returned home with a wealth of knowledge and memories that will last a lifetime. This experience will undoubtedly contribute to their understanding of citizenship and the importance of preserving history.
