Community members are invited to “Reclaiming Pelham’s Natural History: a conversation with Dr. Eric Sanderson” on Thursday, January 8 from 7–9 PM at The Manor Club, 1023 Esplanade, Pelham Manor.
Did you know the Town of Pelham was once an Appalachian oak–hickory forest? Join landscape ecologist Dr. Eric Sanderson, best-selling author of ‘Mannahatta: A Natural History of New York City,’ for an evening exploring the New York landscape prior to European contact—and how its forests, wetlands, ponds, and streams continue to shape our neighborhoods and water systems today. Learn more through the NEW five-borough The Welikia Project website which brings the city’s ecological past, including its bordering Town of Pelham, to life.
Dr. Sanderson will discuss how understanding our ecological history can help guide climate-resilient planning in water-shaped communities like Pelham, which face rising flood risks.
Following the talk, representatives from the Town Historian’s Office, the Junior League of Pelham, Pelham Vine Squad, and the Pelham Preservation & Garden Society will join Dr. Sanderson for a community conversation moderated by the Environmental Coalition of the Pelhams. The discussion will focus on local efforts to restore native habitats, improve water quality, and reclaim Pelham’s landscape for wildlife and people.
A light reception will follow.
This event is free and open to all. Reservations are requested; seating is first come, first served. Reserve your spot at: www.our.show/reclaimpelham
