The Pelham Memorial High School girls varsity basketball team beat Hendrick Hudson 64-52 on Saturday at the Westchester County Center to earn a place in the Section 1 final against Tappan Zee High School. That game is scheduled for the county center next Friday at 5 PM.
While the final score suggested an easy win for Pelham, the actual contest was anything but. The Pelicans started strong, opening up a 9-0 lead before the HenHud players found their footing. Pelham led 28-17 at halftime.
Hudson went on a tear in the third quarter, outscoring Pelham 21-11 to come within one. Early in the fourth quarter, Hudson went ahead, 45-44. From that point on, the Pelicans took over, outscoring their opponent 20-7 and cruising to victory in the final minutes.
Some games are decided by outside shooting. Pelham won this one under the boards, collecting 30 rebounds.
Brooke Green turned in a dominant performance, scoring 24 points, pulling down 13 rebounds and getting 5 steals. Charlotte Gomprecht scored 11 points and grabbed 6 rebounds while defensive whiz Arden Keough scored 6 points, to go with 5 rebounds and 5 steals. Guard Colleen Sheehy scored 10 points and Emma Namba contributed 5.
For her outstanding performance in the win, Green received the team’s golden chain award.
The Pelicans will now face number-one seed Tappan Zee, which dominated Pleasantville 75-38 to advance to the final. The Section 1 championship game is scheduled for 5 PM at the Westchester County Center on March 6. The team loves to see its fans in the stands, so get there if you can!
