To the Editor:
I would like to publicly endorse Annemarie Garcia and Sid Burke for their second terms as BOE Trustees.
Right now, in Pelham, I believe continuity is key in this BOE race. So many initiatives, policies and changes have been made with this group of Trustees, it would be a shame to possibly change course when the work isn’t fully finished.
This current board holds each other accountable, respects each other’s opinions, and pushes each other for the best results- all our children benefit from this collaboration and shared responsibility. Of course, that is their “job,” at face value- to work together. However, watching meetings, hearing their recaps, it’s well beyond that. They all teach and learn from each other. They publicly, and I reckon privately, hold each other’s “feet to the fire.” It is important to keep this momentum going!
Both candidates live in a growth mindset, rooted in doing what is right and just for all students. These are important attributes in our BOE trustees.
I have personally volunteered with both Annmarie and Sid through the years, and they are exceptional people.
I would like to take a moment to double down on my support for Annmarie. I consider few individuals on par with what I call my “professional volunteer” work ethic. Annemarie is right there with us few Pelhamites who quite literally have done it ALL! This is an important facet, because she has been side by side with all of Pelham. Donors, families who are struggling, a gushing teacher, a crying mother… she has experienced all the beauties and tragedies of life in this very community, with us all. She works hard for all children and families. You cannot teach this kind of dedication- you are just born with it. She was clearly born with it and chooses every day to nurture it and grow.
We don’t need to agree with every single decision that our BOE makes. It is impossible to make everyone happy. What we need to do is look to our kids, and the Pelham Public Schools staff. Are they learning, thriving, growing, pushed, safe, etc? That is the mark of this successful BOE. That is why I feel we must keep this current lightning in a bottle and allow the current board to work and advocate together for another year, at least!
Running for office is no small feat. Thank you to all current and past candidates!
*This letter of endorsement is representative of my personal opinion, and I am not speaking for any board I sit on, or any group that I represent*
