A large coyote actively stalked Kim Jaimes and her 70-pound dog Tuesday on Rockledge Drive in Pelham Manor.

Pelham Manor police advised residents via Facebook there have been “several coyote sightings on both the north and south ends of the village.”

Jaimes said she spotted the coyote when she stopped briefly. “He was about 100 feet away,” Jaimes wrote in a post on Facebook. “He saw me looking at him. He started walking towards us. I couldn’t believe he would do that when he knew I saw him. Then he started trotting towards us. I stomped my foot and waved my arms and that spooked him enough to veer off and run past us up the street. He disappeared into a side yard.”

Jaimes said she called Pelham Manor police. “They drove through on Hillcrest and called me back to say they had seen him. It’s not good that in broad daylight this critter feels comfortable coming after me and my big dog.”

The police department issued the following list of precautions:

  • Be mindful of children and pets while outdoors.
  • Do not feed coyotes.
  • Remove all outside food sources including pet food and bird seed.
  • Make garbage inaccessible.
  • Don’t let pets run free.

Residents should not hesitate to call the department at 914-738-1000 for any assistance, police said.
