The PMHS varsity football team picked up their first win Saturday with a 35-21 victory over Sleepy Hollow.

The team is now fourth in the league standings.

Senior quarterback Carlo Volpe led the charge for the Pelicans with a 70% completion percentage, 142 yards passing yards and 3 total touchdowns. The Pelican rushing attack was also formidable. Senior wide receiver/running back Jeremiah Reen ran for 95 yards and 2 touchdowns with 15 carries. Junior running back Thomas Shelton tallied 117 total yards and a receiving touchdown.

Pelham also relied on a strong defensive performance. They held the Sleepy Hollow running game to 40 yards and gave up 236 yards total. Junior cornerback Nassir Spencer led the way with 5 tackles.

“It’s great to get a win,” junior safety Daniel Fredbeck said. “But we have to keep building on this for next week.”

Pelham travels to Lakeland next week in what may be the last game of the season. The team is currently trying to get one more game on the schedule, but their opponent is unknown at this time.

Due to the ongoing pandemic, there will be no playoffs for the football team this year.

“While it is disappointing to not have playoffs, we’re still grateful to even have a season,” junior defensive back Graham Yuen said.
