After a year with interim principal Susan Gilbert, Rachael Garcia has been hired for the position at Colonial Elementary School. Garcia, former principal of P.S. 173 in Manhattan, has worked for the New York City Department of Education for the past 18 years as an elementary school teacher, literacy coach and assistant principal.

Garcia served as the principal of P.S. 173 for the last six years, gaining background in curriculum development and instruction. She intends to utilize the skills she has developed to build and nurture relationships amongst school staff, students, families, the district and stakeholders within the Pelham community.

“I am beyond thrilled to be a part of a community where there is an enormous sense of pride and where children come first,” Garcia said. “I am excited to meet the students, families and staff that make Colonial such an exceptional school.”

Garcia was drawn to Pelham’s emphasis on high expectations and commitment to educating the “whole child.” From the start of the interview process, she said, it became evident that Pelham is dedicated to making a positive impact on the world and possesses an inspiring sense of community where every student’s voice matters.

“I am certain that together, both the school and the community will continue to work together to create opportunities and experiences where everyone can thrive,” Garcia said. “I am committed to creating a culture of excellence – academically, social-emotionally and culturally. “

As principal of Colonial School, Garcia looks forward to simply immersing herself in the culture of Colonial and building relationships so that students and staff can continue to set and surpass high expectations. She envisions a school in which each student and staff member feels included, safe, welcome and challenged.
