Thirteen people were transported to area hospitals Monday morning after what may have been an accidental mixing of chemicals at the New Rochelle YMCA on Weyman Avenue, according to a press release from the New Rochelle Police Department.

The cause is under investigation by New Rochelle detectives, the release said, but current information indicated the incident was accidental and not criminal in nature.

New Rochelle police and and fire departments were dispatched to the scene at 7:14 a,m. for a report of “chemical exposure causing respiratory distress to multiple patrons,” said the release.

Pelham Manor residents were advised to avoid the area by the village in an email at 8:58 a.m.

“There is a large police, fire and EMS presence in the area as the situation is being addressed,” the village said. “Any unnecessary traffic in the area will impede emergency response.”
