Marguerite Elizabeth (Nimphius) Nichols, also known as Betty, daughter of Florence Amelia Caffrey and August Charles Nimphius Sr. entered in to rest on April 26, 2022.

Although diminutive in size, Marguerite was a force to be reckoned with when she strongly believed in something. She was fiercely protective of her family’s legacy and proud of their role in the history of her beloved Pelham.

As a young woman she loved to dance and often spoke of her ballet training and time spent in competitive roller dancing. Marguerite was also a lover of all outdoor activities especially ice skating and hiking. In her later years she wanted to “try something new” and in her seventies she took up cross country skiing, a new love.

She was educated in Pelham from Kindergarten through high school. Then she attended Rutland Junior College in Vermont majoring in languages. Fluent in Spanish she visited Spain to continue her education learning different dialects from the colegio de estudios hispanicos in Salamanca, Spain.  She also spoke some French and German too. She used this knowledge as a translator when working for the state of NY and later when assisting her brother in his legal practice.

A devout Catholic, Marguerite traveled out to Westbury Long Island, to attend mass at the Ava Maria Chapel to hear the mass in its traditional Latin form; She did this every Sunday until it was no longer possible to do so.

Marguerite was very active in the Conservative party, at times taking on leadership roles.

Proud of her German heritage, she thoroughly enjoyed singing as a member of the New Rochelle Damenchor and marching in several Steuben day parades.

Marguerite made many sacrifices in her lifetime to ensure her children enjoyed their life in Pelham as much as she did.

Marguerite is Survived by her three daughters; Hillary (John), Amalie, and Elizabeth (Larry), and by her four grandchildren; Daniel, Lauren, Justine, Paul and by several nieces and nephews. She will be missed by all who knew her. Marguerite is predeceased by her husband; Bill, her son; Edmund, and by her brothers; Charlie and Donald.

A celebration of Marguerite’s life will take place at the Pelham Funeral Home located at 64 Lincoln Avenue, Pelham New York on Wednesday, May 4^th  from 4-8pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at St. Catharine’s Church located at 25 Second Avenue, Pelham New York on Thursday, May 5^th at 10:00am. Interment will follow at Kensico Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family asks donations be made to Columbia law school in honor of her late brother, August Charles Nimphius jr.
