A small fire at 50 Fifth Ave. that was put out prior to the Pelham Fire Department’s arrival caused a lot of smoke in the building on Tuesday morning, according to Chief Robert Benkwitt III.

The was no damage, Benkwitt said.

At around 9:05 a.m., the department responded to a report of smoke at that address, according to a post on the department’s Instagram page. Engine 5, Ladder 2 and an engine from Pelham Manor responded. “Upon entry into the building, it was determined that a spark from construction equipment caused a small fire in the building, which was extinguished prior to our arrival,” the post said.

The department wants “to remind contractors and the residents about the importance of fire extinguishers” being nearby when they’re doing work inside a structure, said Benkwitt.

Signs on the building say it is to be the location of the Treehouse Sweet Shop & Cereal Bar, which Rob and Christina Rubicco had previously said they would open at 205 Wolfs Lane, where the Double Rainbow ice cream store formerly operated.

The Pelham Examiner has emailed Rob Rubicco for comment on the change in location.
