Pelham, New York. On Sunday, December 10, 2023 at 5:00 pm, Christ Church, Pelham will offer a candlelit service of Lessons and Carols, featuring the parish choir, professional choristers and the Jack Hennigan Memorial Organ of Christ Church, under the direction of Jeffrey Hoffman, Christ Church’s organist and choirmaster.

Dating from the late 19th century and popularized in the 20th century by the Choir of King’s College, Cambridge, this cherished holiday tradition of reading through the entire Christmas story from the Bible and the singing of carols by both the choir and the congregation is offered every Advent at Christ Church. There is no charge to attend this event and reservations are not required. An offering will be collected during the service.

This year’s service will include the recently composed carol Advent Moon by the popular English composer Cecilia MacDowall (with a text by the Virginia poet Angier Brock), and many beloved carol arrangements by David Willcocks, Ralph Vaughan Williams, and Stephen Cleobury, among others, as well as familiar works by composers Peter Warlock and Elizabeth Poston, and an original a cappella arrangement by Jeffrey Hoffman of “Sweet Little Jesus Boy.” The evening culminates with a special performance of Christ Church’s own version of the beloved abolitionist carol “O Holy Night” with choir and soloists.

Christ Church, Pelham (the Parish of Christ the Redeemer) is located at 1415 Pelhamdale Avenue in Pelham Manor at the corner of Pelhamdale Avenue and Shore Road.
