EcoPel to give workshop on community-driven wildlife habitat planting on Jan. 18

Looking for a way to meaningfully improve our environment in 2024?

The simple act of replacing lifeless grass and invasive plants with native plant shrubs is conservation A-C-T-I-O-N for a climate resilient community and beautiful neighborhood. YOU can do it!

The workshop, “Plan a Low-Cost Community-Driven Wildlife Habitat Planting on Public Lands,” provides the nuts and bolts to implement small-to-large scale ecosystem restoration projects using affordable bare root plants from the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation Saratoga Tree Nursery. THANK YOU New York State; Learn more.

EcoPel volunteers, Anna Simonsen-Meehan and Tai Montanarella will guide participants through the step-by-step process they took to execute three distinct turf-to-shrubland initiatives in Pelham. They will cover the basics such as:

  • Bare-root planting techniques
  • Determining public land jurisdiction
  • Obtaining permissions and/or permits
  • Establishing a network of community partners and volunteers
  • Orchestrating a successful planting day

Gain practical skills and confidence to develop an actionable plan to coordinate a spring habitat planting in your neighborhood. This workshop is perfect for any land manager with a vision to add habitat wherever possible; from ambitious homeowners to landscape pros, to Scouts groups and hopeful residents who wish to influence green space care.
