Columbia psychiatrist to give Zoom presentation Monday on using science to talk to kids about drugs

Editor’s note: This press release was provided by Pelham Together. The Pelham Examiner publishes press releases in the form received as a service to the community.

Pelham Together is looking forward to welcoming Dr. Diana Martinez to Pelham to share her insights about using science when speaking to our kids about drug use.  Dr. Diana Martinez is a psychiatrist and neuroscientist who studies addiction at Columbia University and a mom of two sons. Her work and the statistics on youth drug use inspired her to develop a new approach to bring critical information on this topic to kids, especially post legalization of marijuana.

Her presentation, “Using Science to Talk about Drugs,” provides information that can help parents have a frank, open conversation about drug use with teenagers, especially in an environment of increased access. She’ll share information on the interaction between mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety, and ADHD, self-medication, how to help a friend, and how to reduce the risks of use. Following the discussion, Dr. Martinez will be available to parents for questions.

Dr. Martinez will present to parents via Zoom on Monday, March 11, 7-8:30pm. Please register here to receive the link. Dr. Martinez is also presenting during the day to 10th grade students during two PMHS Health classes. She will work with educators and social workers (at PMHS and PT) to tailor the presentation so that they can continue to distribute the information to more young people going forward.

The presentation is free to participate. Please join us.

Thank you to the Rotary Club of the Pelhams for their support to make this event possible.
