Pelham native Kate Douglass broke the short course 200m breaststroke world record at the World Aquatics Swimming World Cup in Incheon, South Korea, on Thursday.
The PMHS alumna finished with a time of 2:14.16, beating the previous record held by American swimmer Rebecca Soni at 2:14.57 from the 2009 Duel in the Pool.
Short course races take place in 25-meter pools, whereas long course races, such as the ones at the Olympics, take place in 50-meter pools.
Douglass’s new world record comes nearly three months after her success at the 2024 Paris Olympics, where she won two gold medals in the women’s 200m breaststroke and the women’s 4x100m medley relay, and two silver medals in the women’s 200m IM and the women’s 4×100 freestyle relay.
Douglass is also the American record holder in the 50m freestyle and 200m breaststroke in long course pools, as well as in the 200m IM in short course.
