As the winter sports season begins, the PMHS winter track team is welcoming the coming competition with intense warm-ups, supportive peers and lots of running.
“All of our practices start at 3:30 p.m. and focus on gradual warm-ups, dynamic stretching, strength, agility, endurance, speed and event-specific training,” said Coach Scott Brown. “We use the track, the weight room, the upstairs hallway, the stairwells, the fitness center and local hills and streets in Pelham. We end our practices with core and strength work.”
The kickoff meet will be on Dec. 9 at the Armory in the Bronx, and the following meet for freshmen and sophomores will be on Dec. 11.
“Running in the cold can be frustrating, but winter track is definitely a great way to keep in shape and compete during this season,” said Eleanor Condon. “I also enjoy the Armory, where we do most of our meets, for its small track.”
The fall cross country team had multiple runners recognized for their achievements. For the boys, all-league honors went to Elliott Levine, Julian Kalehoff, George Negrin, Kyle Matyko, Finnegan Mullen and Evan Goodman. Honorable mentions included Dmitri Ross and Ilan Luciano. For the girls, all-league honorees were Riley Campbell, Serafina Lavallee, Riley Schindler, Sadie Ashlock, Caroline Mingey and Condon. Riley Campbell was chosen All County. Honorable mentions were received by Sonia Brown and Venice Mancuso.
“I’m really excited about what I can do this season after having such a successful cross country season,” said Lavallee, track team captain and a senior. “I’m looking forward to the long meets and cold practices where I can make even more memories with my teammates and friends. I think for the girls distance team, we have a very strong group.”
“I am super excited to finally start race walking again and see how far I can go with it,” said Mancuso. “I know the team will do amazing things this upcoming season, especially our girls, since the team bond has grown to be so strong.”
“Our goal is to build overall fitness to aid in all sports and physical activities as well as shape track specific athletes for post-high school competition,” said Brown.
