PELHAM, NY – May 27, 2025 – Answering the Scout Oath’s call to fulfill their ‘Duty to Country,’ Troop 1 Pelham once again honored the nation’s heroes around Memorial Day. Their engagement in several meaningful activities during this period of remembrance demonstrated the troop’s commitment to honoring veterans and commemorating the fallen.
The troop’s period of remembrance began on Saturday, May 17, as fifteen Scouts and adult leaders participated in the annual flag laying at Woodlawn Cemetery in the Bronx, NY, an event hosted by the cemetery. They respectfully removed worn American flags and placed new ones at the gravesites of veterans to ensure their service is remembered.
Troop 1 kicked off its series of Memorial Day events on Monday, May 26, with eleven scouts assisting the Pelham Civics Association with their annual Memorial Day breakfast. At the Daronco Town House, scouts welcomed visiting service members, including sailors from the Naval Reserve Center in the Bronx, members of the U.S. Coast Guard, and U.S. Marines from North Carolina (who had arrived aboard the USS New York). The scouts took the opportunity to learn from all the service members about their backgrounds and their duties. Scouts also helped prepare Veteran’s Park for the ceremony by setting up chairs and flag stands.
Later that day, a large contingent of twenty-one Troop 1 scouts proudly participated in Pelham’s annual Memorial Day parade, a cherished community tradition. Troop 1 scouts Ryan Feldman and Nate Waters had the honor of leading the entire procession for American Legion Post 50, carrying its American flag and Post flag at the head of the parade. The rest of the Troop 1 contingent marched alongside the Pelham Memorial High School marching band, local veterans, Cub Scout packs, Girl Scout troops, the Pelham Civics, and numerous other community organizations. Commencing at the Manor Club on Esplanade and proceeding to Veterans Park on Fifth Avenue, the parade route was lined with residents waving American flags and cheering for the participants. As they marched, Troop 1 Scouts also engaged with the crowd, handing out small American flags and candy, much to the delight of spectators.
The parade concluded at Veterans Park with the somber Memorial Day ceremony. A key element of this tribute is the reverent reading of the names of all Pelham residents who made the ultimate sacrifice, ensuring their individual legacies are honored and remembered by the community. Following tradition, Troop 1 scouts Nick Shehu, Spencer Rios, Jason Ganpat, and Matthew Wengroff joined Pelham Girl Scouts to help lead the community in the Pledge of Allegiance.
Troop 1’s participation in these varied Memorial Day observances demonstrates their deep respect for veterans and fallen service members, and their dedication to the core Scouting principles of citizenship and community service.
