For almost two weeks, fans of Caffe Ammi in North Pelham have lamented the sudden and seemingly temporary closure of their favorite coffee shop, hoping it would reopen soon. Since late July, they puzzled over the meaning of a sign in the window notifying customers that the sudden closure was due to “emergency construction.”

On Thursday, they learned the bitter truth: the Caffe Ammi Roasting Company had been sold to Compass Group, a foodservice company, and their cherished spot for a cortado or macchiato would be no more.  Joseph Ammirati, who launched the coffee shop in 2017 and has helped expand his family’s coffee and tea business in the New York area, informed his patrons of the sale and closure in a post on Instagram.

“Cafe Ammi Roasting Company has been acquired by Compass Group, USA,” he wrote. “Our last cup of coffee at our retail location was served on July 28, 2025. While this marks the end of an era for our coffee shop, we are excited to shift our focus toward wholesale, bringing our signature roasts to more partners and locations. This new direction allows us to continue sharing our passion for quality coffee.”

Ammirati thanked his customers for their loyalty. “While our cafe is closing, our passion for crafting exceptional coffee continues,” he wrote. “Stay tuned for updates on new collaborations, community, events and ways to enjoy Cafe Ammi in the future. Thank you for being a vital part of our story. We’re excited about this new chapter, and look forward to sharing it with you.”

Compass Group USA, based in Charlotte, NC, is a subsidiary of the UK-headquartered Compass Group, a food service conglomerate that operates in 30 countries. In the US, the company provides foodservice operations to colleges, hospitals, sports stadiums, school cafeterias, airport lounges and other venues.

While the sale of the Caffe Ammi Roasting Company will likely create opportunities for it to grow throughout the country, the closure of its distinctive coffee shop on 6th Street, near the corner of 5th Avenue, left a bad taste in its fans’ mouths. A post on the Parents of Pelham Facebook group Thursday asked: “Can someone point me to the Closed Caffe Ammi support group.” The post generated more than two dozen comments as of Friday morning.
