The Pelham Art Center Student Exhibition, an annual celebration of art that features artwork across different ages, showcases the talents of the students who participated in the Pelham Art Center’s classes. The exhibit opened on September 18 and will continue throughout October until the 19th. The Student Exhibition boasts a wide range of media, from ceramics to realistic paintings.
The event began with an opening ceremony, which encouraged attendees to freely roam around, view the pieces, and talk with the artists. Anyone could attend: students who were enjoying being in the spotlight, supportive parents, or simply people who were taking in the art. For many of the young student artists, the exhibition is their first experience with having their independent work displayed in a professional gallery setting.
“Organizing this event gave many students a good opportunity to get started in showcasing their projects,” said Sonika Gupta, the Education and Programs Coordinator at the Pelham Art Center. “The annual showcasing helps students get a place to have their work under a light.”
Ada Weishaupl, a student artist, expressed, “I think it’s pretty cool that other people get to see my work. I put a lot of work into it, so I’m glad it’s getting noticed.”
Another artist Ari Rueda stated, “This is my first, like, official gallery show and I’ve never experienced something like this, so it’s really exciting.”
By giving students the chance to present their work in a real gallery, the Art Center prepares them for future art opportunities and community wide celebrations of their creativity.
Rebecca Schwarz, an art teacher at the Pelham Middle School who was in attendance, said, “I think art is one of the things that slips through the cracks — it barely gets recognition. But having your art on display is a wonderful way to showcase your talents and get the recognition for them. ”
The exhibition is a great opportunity for community members to support young artists and experience their talents.
