The Pelham Memorial High School varsity football team finally met its match at Glover Field last week, as the Westlake High School Wildcats relied on an unstoppable rushing attack to inflict a 34-14 loss on the Pelicans, dropping the team’s record to 3-2.
The game started out with promise for the Pelicans, who jumped out to a 7-0 lead less than five minutes in, following a 39-yard touchdown pass thrown by QB Frankie Reese to WR Vincent Stamp. Pelham clung to the lead until the second quarter, when Westlake tied the game on a rushing touchdown. The Wildcats then pounded in another score before halftime to go up 14-7 at the break.
Westlake added to its lead with two more rushing touchdowns in the third quarter, followed by a final score late in the fourth quarter to put the game away.
The Pelicans managed one final score with 20 seconds left in the game, when Sean Grupert pounded the ball in from short range.
The Pelicans compiled 137 rushing yards in the game, but its defense could not withstand Westlake’s rushing attack, which amassed 293 yards on the ground. Westlake held the Pelicans to 255 total yards, the team’s lowest since a 224-yard performance in week one against Peekskill.
Following the loss, Pelham is now tied for fourth place in the Section One Class B standings, along with Pearl River High School. The Pelicans trail Westlake (3-1) for third place, as well as Irvington High School (4-1), and Sleepy Hollow High School (4-1) for first place in the division.
