Village of Pelham firefighters hosted a chili cook-off earlier this month to raise money for breast cancer awareness. The event, on the afternoon of Sunday October 5, featured a contest among local fire departments to see who could cook up the best chili, as determined by a panel of judges including Village of Pelham mayor Chance Mullen, firefighter AJ Fusco, who publishes recipes on Forkandhoseco.com, and John Gristina of Fenice Pizza in Pelham.
Rye’s Fire Department won the honors for the day. The fire departments and other first responders who “brought the heat” to the event included those from Pelham Manor, Lake Mohegan, New Rochelle, Harrison and Metro North. In addition, representatives of Eastchester EMS, Pelham EMS and the Village of Pelham police also turned out in force.
“I think it’s a great community event,” said Nick Louros of EMS Eastchester. “My wife had breast cancer and we survived and any way we can help the community we can, so I think this is great way to do it.”Â
Pelham Manor fire chief Michael Greco also praised the event. “It brings the brotherhood and sisterhood of firefighters together for worthy cause, which in this case is breast cancer,” he said.
