The Middle School music ensembles delighted audiences over the past two weeks with performances by the jazz and concert bands, orchestras and choruses.

The bands, led by Director Andrew Van Bochove, kicked off the concert series on December 11 with the jazz band showing off their improvisational skills on songs such as “Hawaii Five O,” “Night Train” and “Green Onions.” The 6th grade band then took the stage to perform “Apollo Fanfare” and “Flourish for Winds and Percussion.” The seventh grade band then performed “Liturgical Fanfare” and “A December Triptych” before the eighth grade band played “Falcon Fanfare,” “Hooked on a Feeling,” and “Declaration in Blue,” to close the concert.

On December 13, Dr. Michele Zanky and the 6th grade orchestra performed “Aspen Falls,” “Big Ben Boogie,” “Night at Symphony Hall (William Tell Overture),” “Ode to Joy,” and “Deck the Halls.” The seventh and eighth grade orchestras then played “Chorale,” “Skater’s Waltz,” “The Gauntlet,” “Fox in the Chicken House,” and concluded with “March from the Nutcracker Suite.”

Finally, on December 19, Maria Abeshouse directed the choruses accompanied by 10th grade student Isaac Blackburn on piano. To start the concert, all of the choruses sang “Amani (A Song of Peace). The sixth grade chorus then performed “Bowling Green,” “The Little Drummer Boy,” and Hine Ma Tov.” The 7th and 8th grade choruses then joined together for John Lennon’s “Imagine,” and then the 7th grade chorus sang “John Henry” and “Noel Noel.” Once more, the 7th and 8th grade choruses came together to sing “Al Shlosha D’Varim” featuring solist Cristina Stefanizzi.” The eighth grade chorus then sang “Wade in the Water” featuring soloists Leah Sherbansky, Audrey Levenson and Robbie Shepherd, and a Spanish carol “Riu Riu Chiu” with soloists Emma Van Praagh, Kirsten Agbenyega, and Andrea Arcila Rodriquez. Finally, all three choruses joined back together to conclude with “Winter Wonderland.”
