Picture House screens The Age of Innocence, followed by Q&A with Oscar-nominated screenwriter Thursday

Editor’s note: the following press release was provided by The Picture House.

On Thursday, May 2nd at 7:30 p.m. The Picture House Regional Film Center (TPH) will host a special screening of The Age of Innocence followed by a Q&A with the Academy Award nominated screenwriter Jay Cocks. First released in 1993, The Age of Innocence (PG, 138 mins.) was nominated for five Academy Awards and was the winner of the Oscar for Best Costume Design.

Based on the timeless novel by Edith Wharton of the same name, The Age of Innocence starring Daniel Day-Lewis, Michelle Pfeifer, and Winona Ryder is a captivating romance about three wealthy New Yorkers caught in a tragic love triangle, the ironically-titled story chronicles the grandeur and hypocrisy of high society in the 1870s. At the center of the film is Newland Archer (Day-Lewis), an upstanding attorney who secretly longs for a more passionate life. Engaged to the lovely but ordinary socialite May Welland (Ryder), Newland resigns himself to a life of quiet complacency. But when May’s unconventional cousin (Pfeiffer) returns to New York amid social and sexual scandal, Newland risks everything for a chance at true love.

After the film, TPH critic-in-residence Marshall Fine will moderate a discussion and Q&A with the screenwriter Jay Cocks. A former Time Magazine film critic who turned successfully to screenwriting, is credited with Kathryn Bigelow’s, Strange Days and the Cole Porter bio-pic De-Lovely. He worked on The Last Temptation of Christ and co-scripted Gangs of New York for Martin Scorsese, and was nominated for an Academy Award for his screen adaptation of The Age of Innocence. A native New Yorker, Cocks is a graduate of Kenyon College and was married to the actress Verna Bloom.

Tickets to the advance screening and discussion are $15/general admission, $12/students, seniors, and FREE for members and are available at www.thepicturehouse.org or at the box office, 175 Wolfs Lane, Pelham, NY 10803.
