Rotary Club of the Pelhams recognized PMHS seniors Sophie McSpedon and Violet Massie-Vereker as Marilyn Stiefvater Scholars of the Month at a luncheon on May 1.

Sophie plans to attend the University of Michigan in the fall. She is a member of the National Honor Society as well as the math, science, English and social studies honor societies. She has been recognized for orchestra, violin and viola performances. Her extracurricular activities include Physics Club, Latin Club, Social and Political Activist Club, Philosophy Club, Environmental Science Club and Human Rights Club. She has participated in rowing events, cross country and track.

Violet, who will attend McGil University, is a member of the National Honor Society as well as the math, science, English, Ti-Music and social studies honor societies. She has received a Woman of Distinction Award and was Woman’s E-News Teen Honoree for her activism. She founded #MeNext social media movement advocating gun control legislation after the Parkland shootings. She is a co-founder of Pelham Eliminates Plastics and was a local organizer of March for America. She participates in track, the school drama program, forensics speech debate and Pelham Model UN. She is the opinions and ideas editor for the Pelham Examiner.

In addition to recognizing two PMHS students as Scholars of the Month during the school year, Rotary Club of the Pelhams awards a $10,000 scholarship to a graduating PMHS senior annually. Funds for the scholarship are collected from donations by community members and Rotarians. Tax deductible donations made payable to Pelham Rotary Charities Fund  with the memo “scholarship” may be mailed at any time of the year to Rotary, PO Bo 8073, Pelham, NY 10803.
