Sophia Leung and Nevan Malwana, 2021 Pelham Memorial High School graduates, were honored on July 21 as the winners of the Maggie Klein Excellence in Local Journalism Scholarships. Each received $2,000.

They were honored at a luncheon held by the Rotary Club of the Pelhams at Rockwells Restaurant.

Leung, who was recognized for her reporting for the Pelham Examiner, plans to attend the University of Pennsylvania. Malwana, who was recognized for his work as an editor of the PMHS student newspaper the Pelham Mel and a reporter for the Pelham Examiner, plans to attend Boston University.

The goal of the Rotary’s Maggie Klein Scholarship for Excellence in Local Journalism is to honor two graduating PMHS seniors who have demonstrated a serious commitment to covering news in the Town of Pelham. Maggie Klein, a member and past president of the Rotary Club of the Pelhams, was founder and editor of the Pelham Weekly, which closed in 2015 after 23 years and transitioned to pelhamplus.com, which closed at the end of 2019.
