The Pelham Examiner has been accepted as a member of the Institute for Nonprofit News (INN) following a vote of the organization’s board of directors. With 500 members, INN is the leading organization in the U.S. supporting not-for-profit newsrooms.
The Hudson Valley Local News Lab Inc., the nonprofit that owns and operates the Pelham Examiner, was added to the INN’s network of news organizations on May 14.
The Examiner joins other local papers—digital, print and hybrid—that cover villages, towns and counties, including the Daily Catch in Rhinebeck and Red Hook, the Highlands Current in Philipstown, the Rochester Beacon, the Peekskill Herald and the Athens County Independent in Ohio. There are also nonprofit member outlets that cover subject areas at the national level: education (ChalkBeat), religion (National Catholic Reporter, The Forward), investigative journalism (ProPublica) and politics (Politifact).
Statewide and and big-city newsrooms are represented. The Texas Tribune, a multiple award-winning trailblazer in the nonprofit news world founded in 2009, is a member. So is the Baltimore Banner, a three-year-old city news site that won a Pulitzer Prize this year.
On its website, the INN said it “strengthens and supports 500 independent news organizations in a new kind of news network: nonprofit, nonpartisan and dedicated to public service. From local news to in-depth reporting on pressing global issues, members of the INN Network tell stories that otherwise would go untold—connecting communities, holding the powerful accountable and strengthening democracy. INN programs help these news organizations develop revenue and business models to support strong reporting, collaborate on editorial and business innovation, share services and advance the diverse leaders who are forging a new future for news.”
As a member, the Pelham Examiner gains access to the NewsMatch program administered by INN. During November and December—the key fundraising period for nonprofits—every dollar the Examiner raises will be matched dollar for dollar by NewsMatch, doubling the impact of gifts from the paper’s local supporters.
The newspaper will also be able to take advantage of other programs that support sustainability, expanding audience reach and creating editorial best practices. INN runs an annual convention, peer communities and editorial collaborations between members.

The Pelham Examiner is already a member of the New York Press Association, the Association of Nonprofit News Organizations and Local Independent Nonprofit News (LION) Publishers.
