Kate Douglass continued her success at the World Aquatics Championships Tuesday, winning a silver medal in the finals of the women’s 100m breaststroke competition, her second medal of the meet.
With a strong closing kick, Douglass came back from fourth place at the turn, surging ahead of 21-year-old Qianting Tang of China near the finish. Only a remarkable closing kick from Germany’s Anna Edlet in the outside lane prevented Douglass from taking home her second gold of the competition. Edlet finished the race with a time of 1:05:19 and Douglass came in at 1:05.27, just eight-hundredths of a second later.
It was the Pelham native’s personal best in the long-course 100m breaststroke.
“I never expected that time coming into this meet,” she said in an interview with NBC Sports. “So I’m really happy about that.”
Douglass’ next race at the World Aquatics Championship will be on Thursday, in the qualifying heats for the women’s 200m breaststroke.
