The Pelham Memorial High School varsity baseball team dominated Edgemont high school in round one of the playoffs on Saturday at Glover Field, with an 11-3 win. The victory followed a win in over Edgemont the team’s regular season finale on May 7, creating momentum for the postseason.
In recent years, Pelham has been unable to get past the second round in the playoffs, but this year, with a younger team, the team hopes to overcome that hurdle.
On Saturday, Ben Pollock and Dario Morovic handled the pitching duties well, shutting down Edgemont on the mound. Their hitting was also rolling, with multi-hit efforts across the board. Nick Starvatow and Spencer Polsky, among others, had two hits each, and the whole team contributed to the first-round victory.
âWe had our April break trip to Disney and played nine games down in Florida,” coach Brian Leighton said, adding that the road trip contributed to team bonding and overall improvement. âThe players enjoyed it and we think this year, with a stronger team, we’ll be able to make it far.”
Pelham competes in League 2 of Conference D in Section 1 New York Baseball. The squad finished the regular season with a 15-5 record, which earned the title of league champions in the regular season. The team’s pitching has stood out this year, with Pelham pitchers throwing two no-hitters during the season.
Following Saturday’s win, the varsity squad is moving on to the second round this Tuesday night. The Pelicans will face the Panthers from Walter Panas High School at Glover Field.
