Finally, a full two weeks after November 4, the vote totals are in for Pelham Manor’s hotly contested elections for mayor and the board of trustees. No overseas absentee ballots arrived by the November 17 cutoff date for residents living abroad, so last week’s vote totals hold; incumbent mayor Jennifer Lapey bested challenger Mark Cardwell while Deborah Winstead and incumbent Tim Case tallied more votes than Ryan Kurtz and incumbent DJ McLaughlin in the race for two open slots on the board of trustees.
The next step is for the Westchester County Board of Elections to certify the results. Because the margins of victory in these races were so narrow–Lapey won by 20 votes and Case eked out a 2-vote win over Kurtz–the election will be subject to a mandatory manual recount conducted by the county board, according to Nardara Ford, an executive assistant to Democratic Commissioner Tajian Nelson. As of now, the recount has not been scheduled, she said.

Since it has now been a week since the overseas ballot cutoff date, it would be great if the Examiner could ask again when the recount will be scheduled. It’s not a huge task, and it’s surprising that a body commended for its “efficiency” has not acted to date.
